Library Overview

The Archives and Special Collections department of Colorado State University Libraries focuses on documenting the university and areas related to its disciplinary strengths, especially its world-renowned fields of water and agriculture research. Holdings related to the University Archive include institutional records, university publications, and over a half-million photographs and glass plate negatives dating from the university's founding in 1870 to the present day that document the academic and social history of Colorado State University and the state's Front Range region. In addition to its University Archive, the department is also home to two major topical collections: the Water Resources Archive and the Colorado Agricultural Archive.

Beyond its three major archival collections, the department houses incunabula and items of antiquity-some of which were acquired in the mid 1960s from the Grand Trianon, a historic house that is now the Colorado Springs School. Additional holdings of note include: the Equine Collection, the Bailey Botany Collection, the Fore-edge Painting Collection, and the Vietnam War Literature Collection. The libraries' ongoing focus on digital initiatives and access has facilitated the creation of popular online collections such as the Warren and Genevieve Garst Photographic Collection of wildlife still images, the Sidney Heitman Germans from Russia Collection, and the International Poster Collection, a unique online database of over 1,600 posters created by artists worldwide, documenting international events of cultural and political significance.
