Library Overview

The collections in the University of Nebraska–Lincoln Libraries' Archives and Special Collections are focused on the major teaching, research, and academic programs of the university. The collections are composed of rare and unique documentary materials created by university administration, faculty, and students, with additional collections from individuals and organizations external to the university. Collection strengths are reflected in manuscripts, rare books, ephemeral print materials, photographic collections, and digital texts. Areas of strength include the following: agriculture, ethnic American collections, folklore and folk arts, French Revolutionary War materials, Great Plains history and literature, United States military history, natural history and the sciences, US railroads, Russian history, and social sciences.

Among these focus areas are significant primary resources, such as 14 distinct collections with materials created by and about Willa Cather, the Mari Sandoz Collection relating to Great Plains and American Indian history, and the Benjamin A. Botkin Collection of Applied American Folklore. Numerous collections support quilt-related research and scholarship. Among these collection are the American Quilt Study Group (AQSG) Research Library and Records, and papers from Sally Garoutte, Jonathan Holstein, Michael James, and Penny McMorris. A broad array of collections document military history with a concentration in World War I and World War II materials.
