Library Overview

The University of Oklahoma Libraries actively gather and preserve rare research materials and unique primary sources in their special collections. The Western History Collections was begun in 1927 by University of Oklahoma history professor Edward Everett Dale. The collections acquire and preserve scholarly research materials in anthropology, Native American studies, Oklahoma history, and the history of the American West. The collections contain more than 1.5 million photographs including images of Oklahoma and University of Oklahoma history, which are available to individuals seeking a connection with earlier times. The History of Science Collections were begun in 1949 with the loan of 129 books by University of Oklahoma geologist and alumnus Everette Lee DeGolyer. The collections contain over 91,000 volumes, including 55 books published during the first 50 years of printing. The Harry W. Bass Business History Collections were begun in 1955 with funding from Harry W. Bass, a former student at the University of Oklahoma and a leader in the petroleum industry. The collections contain books, journals, microforms, and videos on a number of topics including the histories of business leaders and firms, and the economic, social, and political forces that influence the role of business and industry in society. The John and Mary Nichols Rare Books and Special Collections are comprised of rare books and special research materials in British, European, and American literature dating from the 15th century to the present. The collections feature a number of first edition works by Charles Dickens, Jane Austen, and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.
