Library Overview

Special Collections and University Archives in the University of Oregon Libraries contains more than 1 million items. Holdings range from medieval codices and rare books to literary and historical manuscripts, university archives, original art, photographs, architectural drawings, and ephemera. These holdings include over 3,000 individual manuscript collections (18,000 linear feet), more than 100,000 monographs, 19,000 linear feet of University Archives, 500,000 photographs, 5,000 architectural drawings, 5,000 original drawings and illustrations, and over 20,000 broadsides and pieces of ephemera.

Collection strengths are Oregon history, politics, and culture; authors and illustrators of children's books; popular literature, with an emphasis on Western fiction; speculative fiction and science fiction; missionaries to foreign countries, especially in East Asia; women's history and studies; photographs, especially pertaining to the Northwest; labor and environmental history; Northwest literature; New Spiritualism (Rajneeshism); and the conservative movement in the mid- to late 20th century.

Among the most notable holdings are the Ursula Le Guin Papers, Damon Knight Papers, Abigail Scott Duniway Papers, Senator Wayne Morse Papers, Paul Wiener Papers, James Ivory Papers, Doris Ulmann Photograph Collection of Appalachia, Lucille Ogle Papers (Little Golden Books), Virginia Lee Burton Papers, Tee A. Corinne Papers and the records of the Oregon women's land movement, Gertrude Bass Warner Collection of Asian art books and photographs, Bill Bowerman Papers (track and field), Major Lee Moorhouse Photograph Collection of Native Americans, and collections of medieval and Renaissance illuminated manuscripts and incunabula.

These collections provide the materials for original scholarship and the resources through which the present generation of scholars can train the next in research methodologies and critical thinking. The collections are at the very heart of the university's research and teaching mission.
