Library Overview

The Department of Special Collections and University Archives (SCUA) is a center for research in the history and impact of social change in America and the history of western New England. With substantial holdings in African-American history and culture, social and racial justice, organic and sustainable agriculture, the environment, the peace movement, communal and alternative living, and the labor movement and labor radicalism, the department houses approximately 30,000 volumes, 550 manuscript collections, and several hundred historic maps, as well as the official records of UMass Amherst. SCUA has also developed depth in areas as diverse as Revolutionary-era France and Belgium (1789-1848), Scottish literature, the Anglo-American stage (1750-1915), American relations with Meiji-era Japan and the post-war study of Japan, eastern European ethnography, and the literature of American socialism.

Serving a wide range of researchers, from undergraduates to academics and journalists to family historians, SCUA houses a growing collection used by an international audience of students, scholars, and members of the general public.
