Library Overview
The special collections at the Wayne State University Library System are best described as newly emerging. Given the leadership of Dean Sandra Yee, the libraries are actively seeking and adding special collections that complement the curriculum and offer members of the university and metropolitan communities access to resources in print or other formats that they might otherwise be denied. Emphasis has been placed on the development of a Detroit-centric African-American Literature Special Collection, which experienced rapid growth with the acquisition of the Dudley Randall Collection, the Ron Milner Collection, and the archives of playwright and poet Bill Harris. Other collections emphasize children's literature, the papers and ephemera of Florence Nightingale, a collection for the study of peace and conflict, and a collection of urban ethnic materials.
